week5

Dune 2 has been out for almost a month. I went to see it in imax last weekend and I still can't stop thinking about it. 

The story of where humanity might end up 20,000 years from now is interesting to me, especially given the current technological climate. We're being inundated with AI. Chatgpt this, bard that, ai, ai, ai. In Dune, humanity was ruled by AI, computers etc... Once they finally managed to free themselves, they agreed that as a race they'd never return to a place where computers and AI are needed, relied on. They focused instead on perfecting themselves. Manipulating their bodies and minds to solve the problems computers had been relied upon. Its a little fantastical, but the message really isn't. We're creating this thing who's potential for Power can be overwhelming, limitless perhaps. Will it always be on our side? 

So many sci-fi books focus on this potentiality of our relationship with artificial intelligence. We're right at an inflection point, a spot where we're steaming headlong into over reliance. We can see its potential to help and serve. I'm guilty of this. We don't have ai overlords yet, but what's standing in the way? Will we heed the warnings of our sci-fi bards?

As a side note - what can I do to beat my budding reliance on these new useful tools? Am I losing my ability to solve problems on my own?

week6 - xz utils exploit

Crazy news last week about the new xz utils exploit. It was fun to keep track of developments as more news came out. If you don't know or haven't heard, I'm not really the one to tell you. Look for videos on youtube for an explanation of what went down. But I can try a little. Basically an open source project that many distributions of linux rely on for compression, particularly with SSH (and thus root level access) called xz utils, was compromised. A microsoft software engineer found it by running benchmark tests and notices that his ssh connections were half a second slower than usual. What kind of luck is that??? Shows the importance of establishing benchmarks and keeping an eye on them over time I suppose. The exploit was made possible due to a little social engineering that took place in 2021. week2 - rsync

We spoke at length about collaboration and teamwork in our classes this week. This program more than any I've taken in the past relies (and hopefully improves) on our abilities to work in small teams. Meant to prepare us for the jobs we'll have (also hopefully).  Something I thought was interesting in our conversation was how 'being professional' might mean not necessarily being friends/family with coworkers, but treating and respecting them as coworkers. I've always tried to connect with coworkers, become friends, maybe almost family. This has on more than one occasion backfired by creating an expectation on the part of one of us that isn't always met by the other.  I've found at my most recent job that keeping a bit of a distance between myself and my coworkers has significantly reduced potential misunderstanding like how we might treat each other. I still treat them well, maybe even better than I treat family to be honest, but I don't play/joke around...

Apple's Vision Pro was released this last week and dominated the twitter and youtube feed for a solid ... two days. This technology might be the first really gaming changing personal technology since I suppose health/data tracking smart watches were released - apple watch, etc... There's innovation happening constantly, but the big ones have their own category in my opinion. The handheld gaming device, the cell phone, the ipod/mp3 players, the smart phone, the smart watch. Things that people looked forward to and adopted quickly in the tech world, but I can't imagine anyone would have for-seen their future ubiquity. We on the outside of the VR world have heard rumblings of big steps being made with facebook or Meta being at the forefront. But apple seems to be a bit better at bridging the gap between tech and mainstream and their eagerly anticipated release of the Vision pro seems to have ushered in more mainstream interest in the world of VR products.  Is this a flash in t...
